Many people ask "how do you train a therapy dog?"
While there is training involved so your therapy dog knows what is expected of her and what to do, our priority is helping handlers know if they and their dogs are right for therapy work, what type(s) of therapy work would be best for the teams, and what training they need to be good therapy dog teams. Our Therapy Dog workshop gives you information on the many ways therapy dogs are used and the places that welcome therapy dogs, as well as practical, hands-on training with you and your dog.
Therapy dogs and their handlers must have solid temperaments. They cannot be easily upset by sudden loud or unexpected noises, moving objects, crowded areas or emotional situations. Some of these things can be trained for but there has to be some innate characteristics to be a successful therapy dog team. Both the handler and dog must be willing to give unconditional love. This is not just a hobby for you and your dog. Therapy dog work is a commitment to give to others.
